Suchawadee or Nong Aen is the daughter of Suwannatha and Sodapong. Her father is a truck driver who transports groceries in Hua Hin. Her mother is a housewife. She has three children, two older brothers who are normal children, and Nong Aen is the youngest daughter.
When Nong Aen was pregnant, her mother registered her pregnancy at the Hua Hin Red Cross Station, where she went to every appointment. Until she gave birth at Hua Hin Hospital, the doctor at Hua Hin Hospital examined Nong Aen before she went home after giving birth and found that her heart was beating abnormally. The doctor assumed that Nong Aen might have heart disease. However, since Hua Hin Hospital did not have the equipment to do a detailed examination, they referred her to Ratchaburi Hospital. Ratchaburi Hospital performed an echocardiogram and found that Nong Aen had congenital heart disease. Her mother therefore requested a referral letter from Hua Hin Hospital, where Nong Aen is from, to be sent for further treatment at the Children’s Hospital. Her mother brought Nong Aen to be examined and monitored at the Children’s Hospital. But since Nong Aen had many abnormalities, the children’s hospital coordinated with the foundation to support children’s heart surgery to perform the surgery to treat her.
When Nong Aen was about 3 months old, her mother brought Nong Aen to see Dr. Phiraphat, who informed her that her congenital heart disease was a rare type, about 1 in 100, and had a very high risk of surgery, about 50:50. The doctor informed her that if she did not perform the surgery, she would probably not live more than 6 months. However, when Nong Aen was only 3 months old, her condition deteriorated significantly. Dr. Phiraphat decided to perform the surgery on Nong Aen when she was 3 months and 6 days old. The doctor informed her that the surgery would take about 10 hours, but after only 7 hours of surgery, the doctor came out of the operating room and told her parents that Nong Aen had stopped breathing. The doctor tried his best, but after the 10-hour surgery, Nong Aen was able to breathe again. Both the doctor, the team, and the parents were overjoyed, as if it was a miracle that Nong Aen was able to breathe again. After leaving the surgery room, Nong Aen had to stay in a sterile room for about 1 month. During this time, the doctor tried to stitch up the wound on her chest, but whenever they stitched her, she would stop breathing every time. Therefore, the doctor and the nurse team decided not to stitch up her wound and used only gauze to cover it to prevent germs or foreign objects from entering until her condition improved, and then they would stitch up her surgical wound later. She had to use a lot of medicine and was punctured. After that, she was able to move to a regular room, but she still had to stay at Rajavithi Hospital for almost 1 more month. The doctor then allowed her to return home to Hua Hin.
After the surgery, her mother still had to take Nong Aen to check up and follow up on her symptoms every time until now.
Currently, Nong Aen is 11 years old and is in Grade 6 at Ban Samo Phorng Municipality School. (Yanawilasuthit) in Hua Hin, living with her second brother who is currently studying in the first year of vocational certificate. Since her parents separated in 2007, her mother had to work as a beautician at a shop in Hua Hin, earning around ten thousand baht to support her three children: her mother, her second son, and Nong Aen. The three of them rented a house in Hua Hin. After the surgery, Nong Aen was able to go to school like other children. She was also very good at studying, always getting first place in her class almost every year. She also enjoyed doing many activities, such as being the student council president in grade 5, joining the Hua Hin municipal level social studies competition, and receiving a first-place honorable mention in the tray garden competition, the weaving competition, and the chanting competition, in which Nong Aen won first place in the province and became a representative to compete at the district level, etc. In the future, Nong Aen wants to be a teacher because she likes teaching her younger siblings or other children. She will continue her studies at a secondary school in Hua Hin.
