Nong Piyathida or Nong Am was born at Nong Ki Hospital, Nong Ki District, Buriram Province. She was a normal child. Her parents were poor, so they had to leave Nong Am with her grandmother to raise. Her parents came to Bangkok to find work. Her father, Kan Wongprom, worked as a motorcycle taxi driver on Phahonyothin Road, while her mother, Noanchan Prabmaleng, worked as a daily employee at a food shop near Kasetsart University.
When Nong Am was 2 years old, she was sick with a cold, so they took her to see a doctor at a clinic. When the doctor examined her and listened to her heart, he heard a humming sound. The doctor informed her that she might have heart disease and asked her to get a more detailed examination. He sent her to Nong Ki Hospital, but since the hospital did not have a specialist, he sent her to Buriram Hospital. Nong Am continued to receive treatment until 2000 when the doctor who was treating her resigned. Her parents did not take her to any other hospitals because each time she went to see a doctor, her parents had to stop working and travel back home to take her to see a doctor at Buriram Hospital. Each time, the travel expenses were quite high.
Until Nong Am grew up And the symptoms started to get worse. Walking up the stairs was tiring, out of breath, doing anything was tiring, heart beat fast, sometimes when tired and very hot, would feel dizzy and have frequent nosebleeds. Nong Am was a cheerful child, liked to play all kinds of sports, but could not play for long because she was always tired and out of breath. So her parents decided to bring Nong Am to rent a house together in Bangkok for convenience in receiving treatment. When Nong Am moved to Bangkok, she went to see a doctor at her original clinic. The clinic sent her to continue treatment at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health. The doctor said that they wanted to perform surgery on Nong Am to be completely cured, but the cost of the surgery was very high. Since her family was not well off, she only worked hard to make a living, so they did not know what to do.
But the doctor said that the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Foundation would perform the surgery outside of office hours so that Nong would not have to wait long for surgery. The foundation would also take care of the expenses. The surgery was performed on May 15, 2009. After the surgery, she felt happy. Her heart did not beat as fast as before and she did not get tired easily.
Nong Am felt very happy because after the surgery, she would be able to live like a normal child and could go back to school and play the sports she liked. And I would like to thank the foundation that supports pediatric heart surgery and all donors who helped Nong Am be able to return to living like a normal child.
