Nong Phongsanaret or Nong Pan is the son of father Sompong and mother Panita Surathot. His mother said that she never knew that Nong had a congenital heart defect because when he was born, the hospital said that he was normal. They raised Nong normally but noticed that Nong would be short of breath. But they thought it was nothing special, maybe he was just too playful. The family only found out about this when about 2 years ago, when Nong was about 10 years old, he had symptoms of shortness of breath, so they took him to see a doctor at the hospital. The hospital only said that Nong had asthma and treated him according to the symptoms. However, the mother noticed that when Nong was short of breath, he would cough, be short of breath, and have chest pain, so they took him to see a doctor at the hospital. The doctor assumed that Nong might have a congenital heart defect. However, since the hospital did not have a doctor who specialized in this field, they sent Nong to Ratchaburi Hospital for further examination. The test results showed that Nong had a heart valve leak, so the hospital gave him medication and followed up on his treatment to see if the leak could close on its own as Nong grew. Until 2 years later, Nong’s symptoms were still the same. The doctor examined and found that the leaky heart valve was unlikely to close on its own, so he was sent to the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health or Children’s Hospital for further treatment. The Children’s Hospital conducted a detailed examination and found that he urgently needed a heart valve replacement surgery. Therefore, they coordinated to send him to receive surgery under the care of the Pediatric Heart Surgery Foundation at Rajavithi Hospital since April 17, 2021. He underwent the surgery on Tuesday, April 20. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the family, including the mother, were unable to stay with Pan. Pan had to stay at the hospital with the nurses, while the mother and family could only talk to Pan via video call. Pan had to fight all by himself. Even on the day of the surgery, the family could not come to see Pan. However, Pan was strong and capable of staying in the hospital under the care of the nurses for 12 days alone. Now, Pan is so much stronger that he can be discharged from the hospital and safely reunite with his family. From now on, Pan will no longer suffer from shortness of breath and can go back to school with his friends like any other normal child.
