Nearly 100 children with complex congenital heart disease have undergone life-saving surgeries, such as the Extracardiac Fontan procedure or congenital heart valve replacement. These children require lifelong anticoagulation therapy with Warfarin to prevent blood clots. However, maintaining the correct therapeutic levels of Warfarin is extremely challenging. Weekly, and sometimes daily, blood tests are needed to monitor their INR (International Normalized Ratio) levels. For children in remote areas, this often means missing school for extended periods and incurring significant travel expenses to attend appointments at Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok.
The Foundation for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery’s HOME INR project is transforming the lives of these children and their families. We provide portable INR testing devices (approximately 26,750 THB per unit) and test strips (approximately 5,000 THB per 24 strips) to families who qualify. This allows for convenient at-home testing, eliminating the need for frequent hospital visits, reducing travel expenses, and minimizing disruption to their lives.
